I have studied the art of Goju-Ryu karate, which is a traditional form of martial arts that originated in Okinawa, and have attained the rank of Sandan (3rd degree black belt). I initially studied under O-Sensei Skipper Ingham and Sensei Kent Simmons at the Bermuda Karate Institute and subsequently left Bermuda Karate Institute to train under Sensei Simmons at his own school, the Dojo of the Free Spirit. I am not currently training.
My favourite karate gi is from Anshin. Anshin's gis are custom made to the customer's specifications and the price is great. I can attest to the great "return it if it doesn't fit" policy. Having received my first gi from Anshin, I washed the pants and found that they did not fit. I sent the pants back and they were replaced without cost or question. Since then, each of my Anshin gis have fit perfectly. I highly recommend Anshin.
Sensei Kent Simmons - 7th degree
In 2011, my Sensei and friend Kent Simons passed away. He was a larger than life character who will be missed and never forgotten. He made a big impact on all of those who knew him.
At the end of every class, Sensei finished with these words:
"Bring your spirit to rest, never to sleep and never to die. Keep the spirit of karate alive always. Our aim is to be like water, the only time we become hard is when we make contact. Be humble in life and ferocious in battle."
